~SING YOUR HEART OUT~
"You know, Miles wrote a song about you. Heard through the grapevine that he's playing it tonight."
"Oh."
Kara is my best friend, and I trust her with almost anything. Just not how I feel about Miles. I can't even say it out loud. It would be admitting to giving in to the temptation that destroyed my sister.
I clear my throat. "So we're both totally inept with men."
"That appears to be the case, yes."
Kara fixes her makeup and mine and drags me back to the upstairs VIP section. The band is no longer here. The manager, Aiden, assures us that Sinful Serenade is getting ready to go on stage.
I get comfortable on one of the black cubes posing as a normal seat. Kara sits next to me. It's too loud for meaningful conversation, so we trade gossip about Professor Rivers, our poetry professor.
The stage lights go dark. Almost show time. The crowd starts screaming. This is a small space. After all, the band is working on their new material. Miles is singing a song about me. They can't show that off to a large audience. Not when it isn't finished.
How can he be writing a song about me?
The lights go on. The song starts.
It's In Pieces.
I can't bring myself to look at the stage. Certainly not to look at Miles. I press my eyelids together.
His voice seeps into my veins.
Three weeks now.
Can't sleep.
Two weeks now.
Gaping hole in my chest shows no signs of recovery.
That word, a joke, you laugh.
"Running away again, kid?"
A minute here
and then you're gone.
His pain swirls around me, mixing with mine. It's a roller coaster. The only thing I can do is hold on and try to survive the ride.
I pry my eyelids apart. I can't place the expression on his face. But I know what the song means. I know it means he hurts. And I hurt. But together, we hurt a little less.
Or do I have that all wrong?
His voice cuts clear across the room. "Would you like to hear something off the new album?"
The crowd cheers. Every girl in this club is screaming with glee, including Kara, who's at an ear-bursting volume. I'm sure twenty pairs of panties drop, but who am I to judge?
"It's called No Way in Hell. About someone very special." His eyes are on me.
Drew strums his guitar. The song starts. It's something fast and hard, and there's a desperation to the music.
Miles's voice fills the room.
Three a.m. and I can't sleep.
A common refrain, I know.
As a sentiment, it's cheap.
Someone to call, to hold, to love.
No way that word—
She smiles and I drift away—
Oh hell no.
This can't be.
No way I, no way she.
Anyone else, maybe,
but not me.
I don't do this kind of thing.
There's no doubt about it. He's singing about me. It's not like before. This song is about me. And he's singing it to me. I close my eyes, willing my ears to shut, willing my lungs to breathe, willing my heart to steady.
Morning now and I can't think of anything but her laugh, her cries the sound she makes when I sink my teeth.
Oh wow, those details are mine to keep, but she's not.
And suddenly I want-
Oh hell no.
This can't be.
No way I, no way she.
Anyone else, maybe, but not me.
I don't do this kind of thing.
My body refuses to behave. It refuses to do anything but soak in Miles’s song. All the emotion in his voice is crashing all over me. He hurts.
Somewhere deep inside him, he hurts, and God help me, I want to be the one to take that pain away.

~DANGEROUS KISS~
"I think about where I should be too."
"Yeah?"
"The only reason why I'm still in Orange County is 'cause Piper is there. Joel and Kit live in Los Angeles. It would make sense to move closer to them. I'll have to be in LA when we record, have to tour half the year, but the rest of the time…" Ethan looks Violet in the eyes. "I can be anywhere."
"Would you really move away to be with… someone?"
"Would depend on the someone. And if she asked."
"Right, yeah. That's, um, well, you know, it can be good to change things up. I like New York a lot. It's really alive and vibrant. You don't need a car. People don't give a fuck if you wear a black tutu or dye your hair purple—not that I've tried either, but I have seen it." She catches herself babbling and stuffs a strawberry into her mouth.
Ethan waits patiently. He watches her as her words catch in her throat. "Vi, you know you can ask me for anything, right?"
She swallows and speaks softly. "I want to ask for everything. But I don't know if I can."
He moves closer, lowering his voice. "Then let me give it to you anyway."
Violet exhales sharply. "Wait for me to believe I deserve this. Wait for me to figure out where I want to live and what I want to do with my life. Wait for me to be ready to fall in love with you again."
His voice is sweet and steady. "I will."
"You will?"
"Yeah. Tell me what you need me to do, and it's done."
"Really?" Violet presses her lips together as she stares into his deep blue eyes.
He nods and presses his palm against her lower back, pulling her closer. "I want you around, Vi, and I want to be around."
"I want you around."
"I want to erase all the pain in your life. I want to fill you with pleasure and convince you that you deserve it." He presses his lips to hers.
She kisses him back, letting herself be exactly where she needs to be in this moment.
"Tell me you want that too," Ethan murmurs when the kiss breaks.
"I do." Violet runs her fingers through his messy, dark hair. "Can we start now, in your hotel room?"
"Thought you'd never ask."

~CHAPTER ONE~
Between the throbbing house music and the dance floor full of beautiful people grinding, it’s difficult to move. It’s harder to think.
I need to pee. Now. Waiting in the line snaking around the corner is not an option.
How can there only be one bathroom downstairs? One hundred people plus one bathroom equals far too many tortured bladders.
Kara must know where the bathroom is. Wherever she is.
I push through the crowd, but there’s no sign of my best friend.
Someone bumps into me, her hip pressing firmly against my pelvis.
Dammit, my bladder is going to explode at this rate.
Screw upstairs being off-limits. This isn’t a church. It’s some up-and-coming band’s Hollywood mansion. I’m not about to pee my pants respecting the sanctity of rock stars’ bedrooms.
There’s a couple making out on the curving staircase. I step past them and make my way to the second floor.
The sounds of music and conversation fade to a murmur. I’m tempted to hang out here until Kara is ready to go home.
Parties are not my scene. Even my bladder hates them.
I scan the wall, trying to figure out which of the five doors is attached to the smallest room.
There. Second on the left. That must be it.
I turn the knob and push the door open.
Not a bathroom.
Definitely not a bathroom.
There are two people on a bed. The woman is on all fours. The man is kneeling behind her.
They’re naked.
They’re having sex.
Then they’re not. The grunting stops. Flesh ceases to smack together.
The man looks at me. There’s no sign of embarrassment or awkwardness on his face. He’s totally unmoved.
The woman shrieks. She scrambles off the bed, pulling a sheet over her chest.
“Miles, you fucker. I told you I don’t do threesomes!”
Miles. There’s something familiar about him. I try to place him, but my thinking abilities are back to zero.
He’s tall, broad shoulders and chest, sculpted abs, and below his bellybutton…
He’s hard.
He’s hard and he’s huge.
Save for the condom, he’s completely and utterly naked.
A blush spreads across my cheeks. I stammer, attempting and failing to speak. I’ve never seen that before. Not in person. In movies, sure. Textbooks, of course.
But never in person.
I can’t look away.
The guy, Miles, makes eye contact. His voice is even. Calm.
“You mind?”
I take a step backwards. My foot sinks into the plush carpet. I only barely manage to hold my balance.
“Excuse me. I thought this was the bathroom.”
“Next door on the left.”
I know I’m red. Beet red.
“Thanks.”
I pull the door closed so I’m alone in the hallway.
Next door on the left.
I step into the bathroom, lock the door, and die of embarrassment.
It takes twenty minutes for my cheeks to return to a normal color.
I slink back to the sprawling main room and do my best to blend in amongst the partygoers.
Every inch of the hardwood floor is packed with beautiful people talking, flirting, or making out.
It’s like the up-and-coming models, actors, and musicians are attracted to each other. They have a certain glow that mere mortals lack.
And here I thought this was a normal college-students-with-a-keg-and-cheap-vodka kind of shindig.
Kara’s friend invited us. He’s in a band. Are they really this popular? I can’t remember their name, but then it’s hard to think of anything but Miles naked on the bed, hard and ready for action.
The lines of his hips and torso are burned into my brain.
And his…
Dammit, I’m not going there.
I find the closest thing to an empty corner and try to clear my head. I fail. My mind keeps going back to that vivid mental image.
Miles.
He was unfazed, like the sex meant nothing to him. Like the girl on his bed meant nothing to him.
The man is a player. He’s not the kind of guy I need in my life. He doesn’t deserve my thoughts.
This stops. Now.
I scan the room for some better way to stay occupied.
It’s no use.
He’s here. Miles is still effortless and aloof. He’s still unaffected.
The guy has already moved on from the blonde in the bedroom. He’s flirting with a redhead in a designer dress and stilettos.
She’s model gorgeous with perfect hair and makeup. I’m standing here in an H&M skirt and blouse, my brown hair its usual frizzy mess, my black eyeliner doing little to enhance my plain-Jane brown eyes. Liner, mascara, and under-eye concealer are the extent of my makeup knowledge. I think I’m the only woman here who isn’t contoured.
Hell, I know I’m the only one wearing canvas sneakers.
I don’t belong here.
It doesn’t make sense that Miles is looking at me instead of the pretty redhead.
But he is. His clear blue eyes are fixed on mine. They’re gorgeous. I couldn’t see them in the dark but out here, they’re practically shining.
Heat spreads across my chest. I’m gawking.
He smiles, reveling in my attention.
I press my eyelids together to temper my out-of-control blushing. It’s no help. My head fills with that beautiful image of him in nothing but a condom.
Why did I let Kara talk me into coming to this party?
